Kurtis Laing

Kurtis Laing is an Australian director, performer and producer. A recent graduate of the highly regarded Master of Fine Arts (Directing) program at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA), he is the founder and creative director of Good Time Theatrics, a company championing bold and eclectic work across narrative drama, magical realism, sketch comedy, and musical theatre.

His directing credits include When the Rain Stops Falling (Director, 2018), Spring Awakening (Director, 2019), both at Underground Productions and Awakening (Producer/Director, 2021) which showed an intital season at Brisbane’s Backdock Arts before touring South East Queensland. During his time at NIDA, Kurtis served as Assistant Director on Sweeney Todd directed by Constantine Costi, and helmed 21 Chump Street by Lin-Manuel Miranda. He also directed the music video PIECES for rising alt-rock band DICE, commissioned by triple j (2023).

In 2024, Kurtis produced Snowflake by Mike Bartlett and directed and produced Tick, Tick... Boom! at the Old Fitz Theatre. He also curated and directed several musical theatre variety nights, including A Little Night MusicALS and Musicals Actually. His production of Tick, Tick... Boom! is set to transfer to PIP Theatre in Brisbane in September 2025.

Kurtis is passionate about theatrical work that embraces risk, reinvention, and bold formal experimentation. He is drawn to projects that play with structure, integrate music in surprising ways, and challenge conventional modes of storytelling. At the core of his practice is a desire to create space for innovation—championing new voices, hybrid forms, and work that pushes the boundaries of what theatre can be.
